    FULL PROFESSOR IN GENERAL AND APPLIED LINGUISTICS (succession of Gaberell Drachman)

    at the Humanities Faculty of SALZBURG UNIVERSITY

    Applicants are expected to be able to teach general and applied linguistics as broadly as possible. Research qualifications should be documented in at least one of the major areas of theoretical linguistics (phonology, morphology, syntax, linguistic semantics).

    In addition, the candidate should be able to demonstrate competence in at least one of the domains of applied linguistics (such as psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, sociolinguistics, computational linguistics, applied phonetics).

    Ability and willingness for interdisciplinary work and experience in research management are desiderata.

    Candidates should have completed a "habilitation" or a comparable degree (doctorat d'etat, Ph.D., ...).

    Xerox Imaging Systems (Peabody, MA) has an opening for a Member of Technical Staff, Advanced Software Development.

    Candidate will investigate and develop Document Recognition (OCR) software algorithms using pattern recognition and linguistic analysis for product development.

    Requirements include 5+ years experience developing OCR algorithms in a Unix/C environment. Similar development experience in word processing, desktop publishing, imaging, or related industries will be considered.

    Educational requirements include a minimum of an MS degree with a strong concentration in pattern recognition or computational linguistics. A Ph.D. is preferred.

    POSITION IN SEMANTICS, LOGIC AND THEOREM PROVING

    The Institute of Computational Linguistics at the University of Stuttgart has a research position in the project VERBMOBIL. VERBMOBIL aims at developing an on-line speech-to-speech translation system. The present position will involve research into inference modules needed for the resolution of lexical and other ambiguities. In particular, different types of theorem provers will have to be compared for the specific translation-driven tasks at hand. Work will involve both theory and implementation.

    Candidates should have experience in natural language semantics, formal logic and/or theorem proving.

    Contracts will be initially for roughly two years (depending on the date of commencement), with possibilities of renewal. Payment is on the BAT IIa/Ib scale (upwards of ca. DM 65.000,-- a year)

    * RESEARCH POSITION IN MACHINE TRANSLATION *

    Sharp Laboratories of Europe Ltd has a vacancy for a Computational Linguist to join a multinational, multidisciplinary team working on Machine Translation. The successful applicant will be responsible for developing a broad-coverage computational grammar of French using Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG). The work will also involve development and maintenance of bilingual lexicons and will be carried out in close cooperation with other grammar writers developing grammars for English, German and Japanese.

    Native or near-native language skills in French, experience of writing grammars in a Typed Feature Structure environment, and a competent command of English are essential for this position. Practical experience in Prolog and/or C programming, as well as knowledge of German or Japanese, would be valuable additional skills. Enthusiasm and the ability to work in a team will be considered important personal qualities.
