Two Positions: CTE Language Trainer and CTE Language Mentor
Caterpillar Inc., the world's leading manufacturer of heavy
earthmoving equipment and a major publisher and translator of
technical publications worldwide is seeking a LANGUAGE TRAINER and a
LANGUAGE MENTOR to provide training and mentoring in the use of
Caterpillar Technical English (CTE) to its staff of technical writers.
CTE is a controlled English system whose use of restricted
terminology and grammatical structures is monitored by a highly
sophisticated and linguistically principled software system. The
Language Trainer and the Language Mentor would be expected to acquire
a thorough understanding of CTE and the linguistic software and to
assist in preparing and maintaining training materials and in
developing writing guidelines. The Language Trainer would conduct
training classes in CTE and the linguistic software. The Language
Mentor would attend all CTE classes and provide mentoring to writers
as they learn to use CTE and the software.
Candidates for either position should possess a combination of
knowledge and experience of general linguistic principles; innovative
interest in authoring, composition, and editing issues, experience
and/or ability in training and mentoring in grammar and software use,
and excellent writing skills. The positions both require a BA or MA
in Linguistics, English, or related discipline, skills in the
above-mentioned areas, and native-speaker competence of English. A
knowledge of SGML tagging and the terminology and mechanics of the
heavy machinery industry would be very helpful. The positions are
scheduled to begin October 1, 1994 (or as soon as possible
thereafter), with training and mentoring responsibilities to begin
January 1995.
Candidates with US residency will be most seriously considered, due to
time constraints on hiring for these positions. Applications,
including a curriculum vitae or resume and the names of three
references, should be sent to the following address. Please indicate
which position you are applying for.
