    Position Announcement

    The University of Maryland at College Park announces a new position in the Philosophy of Linguistics. The position is tenure track at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, to begin in the Fall semester of 1998. This is a joint appointment bridging the Departments of Linguistics and Philosophy, with the tenure home for the position to be determined. We seek candidates with established records of research excellence who are working on topics at the interface of syntax and semantics. The candidate's work should complement research interests of current faculty in both departments. A record of teaching excellence is also desirable. Ph.D. is required by August, 1998. For best consideration, applications should arrive by November 1, 1997.     LINGUISTICS, Assistant Professor, tenure-track position beginning in September, 1998. Ph.D. required. The salary is competitive. Applicants should provide evidence of effective teaching and show potential for strong scholarship. We have a strong linguistics component in our English studies and English education programs and are seeking candidates with thorough training in theoretical linguistics with ability to teach the history of English and introductory syntax. Innovative approaches to integrating linguistics into an English studies/education curriculum encouraged. Successful candidates will also be expected to contribute to the department's programs in literature, literacy, education, or composition.

    We seek candidates who will provide cultural and experiential diversity to the department. We will make a special effort to recruit candidates from under-represented groups and will consider creative hiring arrangements, such as shared appointments.
