Subject: Position in Modern English Language & Linguistics

The University of Birmingham seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Modern English Language and Linguistics to strengthen and develop teaching and research in the Department of English. Applicants must have a Ph.D. and preferably a good record of research and publications, as well as being a successful teacher. Applicants with any specialisation may apply but it is intended that the appointee will complement and consolidate the work of the Department. The principal areas of language research for which the Department is noted are text and discourse analysis, corpus and computational linguistics, Applied Linguistics, C.A.L.L., lexis and lexicography.

The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, commencing January 1998 or as soon thereafter as is convenient. However, this is a new post designed to enable the Department to increase its recruitment of postgraduate students in the area of Modern English Language, so, assuming this increase takes place and that the appointee makes a success of the job, there is every possibility of them being offered the Department's standard three year rolling contract at the end of the three year period.
