The Department of Linguistics, in conjunction with the Center for the Sciences of Language, is conducting a search with the area of specialization open. We are especially interested in candidates at the rank of Associate Professor, although we will also consider outstanding candidates at the rank of Full and Assistant Professor.

We especially encourage applicants interested in actively contributing to a strong interdisciplinary training and research community. The faculty member will teach graduate and undergraduate courses in linguistics, and supervise graduate students with research interests in linguistics, computational linguistics, and psycholinguistics.

Applicants should send a vita, sample articles and three letters of reference to the Linguistics Search Committee, Department of Linguistics, Lattimore Hall, River Campus Box 270096, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, 14627. Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Greg Carlson, Joyce McDonough, Jeff Runner, Ted Supalla, or Mike Tanenhaus. For fullest consideration, applications or expressions of interest should be received by November 15, l998.

The University of Rochester is an equal opportunity employer. Applications from women and minority candidates are strongly encouraged.

I am currently directing a Teach-in-China Program to assist those in the U.S. and elsewhere interested in teaching English in China/Taiwan to locate positions there. Over the years, we have placed many candidates of our program in teaching positions at various universities and private schools in China. If you would like to experience Chinese culture and teach English in China (or Taiwan), please contact me at email: HSINTLaol.com or tel/fax: 201-432-6861. If you are a native speaker, have a bachelor's degree, good references and are committed to teaching, we guarantee placement. If you would like to talk to people that we have helped locate positions, which I urge you to, I would be happy to provide you with a list.

    (1) First, I'd like to remind you that you can find information on the mew professorship in phonology at

    http://www.ling.uni-potsdam.de/~fanselow/phonology/

Please forward this information to any excellent phonologist you know of!!!

    (2) There will be vacant positions on the BAT IIa level (East German style of payment, though) for a syntactician and a psycholinguistl In total, I have money for 1 1/2 positions, and it depends on the specific profile of the persons to be hired how this will be distributed between syntax & psycholinguistics.

If you want a full position, you must have a doctoral degree.

Both positions are available from Sept. 1 on, they belong to the "Innovationskolleg" (Center of Excellence) "Formal Models of Cognitive Complexity". The project terminates Sept. 1st 1999, but if the project remains a success, I'll apply for a prolongation in half a year, and -as I have said- if the research project remains successful, there is a good chance we get this prolongation.

The syntactician should be familiar with the minimalist program and not be too afraid of OT- and have some interest & knowledge of semantics.

The psycholinguist should have experience/interest in experimental work (reading time studies etc) concerning syntax processing.

Send your application FOR THESE TWO POSITIONS (NOT PHONOLOGY), via e-mail or snailmail, directly to the director of the Innovationskolleg - this is me:
