    The University of South Carolina, Columbia, invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

    The Dean provides leadership and focus for the teaching, research, and service missions of the College, represents the College to a wide range of campus and professional constituencies, and administers the College's activities and budget. The dean serves on the Council of Academic Deans and reports to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. The College is the largest college in the University. It is committed to strong teaching, research, and scholarship. It consists of eighteen academic Departments and ten interdepartmental programs in the humanities, social sciences and fine arts. The College provides excellent general education to all students on the Columbia campus. It offers outstanding degree programs at the bachelors, masters and doctoral level while sustaining a strong and diverse faculty engaged in significant scholarship and artistic activity. Approximately 4,050 undergraduate students and 1,250 graduate students are pursuing degrees in programs offered in the College. The College has 315 tenure-track faculty active in teaching and research.

    The University, founded in 1801, is the flagship campus of an eight-campus, fully accredited, statesupported system. The University of South Carolina Columbia has strong undergraduate and graduate programs and highly regarded professional schools. The University aspires to membership in the Association of American Universities. Over 26,000 students are enrolled on the Columbia campus, and more than 40,000 are enrolled throughout the system.

    The City of Columbia is a progressive, Southern state capital with a broad ethnic and racial background and population of nearly half a million. It is a center of financial and industrial development in the state and has a rich and diverse history. Columbia offers a broad range of cultural and recreational outlets, and it is home to five other institutions of higher learning in addition to the University.

    The Qualifications of the successful candidate should include:

    A record of achievement commensurate with appointment as a tenured full professor in one of the College's departments;

    A clear commitment to academic excellence in undergraduate education, graduate education, and scholarly research;

    Proven administrative experience, a high standard of professional integrity, and a strong sense of professional ethics;

    A strong commitment to the liberal arts as central to higher education;

    Ability to lead the College in developing a dynamic vision of its future, in defining and carrying out its mission, and in communicating effectively with students, faculty, alumni, external funding agencies, and other decision-making bodies;

    A demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity and equal opportunity;

    A willingness to participate in the current capital campaign.
