    Director African American Studies Program The University of South Carolina

    The University of South Carolina invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the African American Studies program. This program is interdisciplinary, requiring skillful, visionary and progressive leadership within the University community.

    The primary responsibility of the director is to oversee the program, which offers both a major and a minor, assuming responsibility for curricular and degree development, the hiring of new faculty, and the development of a post-doctoral fellows program. The director will be involved as well in the establishment of a research center whose foundation will be the rich and extensive resources available in South Carolina, a site so central to the history and culture of African Americans.

    The ideal candidate should have an established record of scholarship and administrative leadership and appropriate qualifications for a senior appointment with tenure within an academic unit. Screening of applications and nominations will begin in October 1998 and continue until the position is filled.     The Linguistics Program of the University of California, Davis, has a tenure-track opening for an open rank faculty position in Second-Language Acquisition, beginning Fall 1999. The candidate must hold a doctorate at time of application, be engaged in a strong research program in second language acquisition and have experience teaching professional preparation courses in teaching English as a second/foreign language. The candidate will be expected to teach five courses per year on theoretical and applied aspects of second-language acquisition both on the undergraduate and the graduate level.
