    The Department of Linguistics at Stanford University expects to award an

    Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities

    for 1999-2000

    This non-faculty one-year position is to be awarded to a highly promising scholar-teacher in Linguistics and carries limited teaching duties as well as the opportunity for scholarly work and intellectual growth. The Ph.D. must be in hand by September 1, 1999 and preferably received within the last seven years. The award carries an annual stipend of $40,050 and may be renewed for a second year. U.S. citizenship is not required.

    Three letters of reference and application papers for 1999-2000 are due as early as possible and must be postmarked no later than November 13, 1998. Because of the volume of papers expected, this deadline is firm. Candidates will be notified of the results by mid-February, 1999. Please mark applications papers and envelope:

    Application Procedure

    Applications must include the following, and each section should be clearly numbered and the pages clipped together. (Printed forms are not required except for the basic information form, Section 1.)

    SECTION Fill out two copies of the form and attach to the 1 front of the application with a curriculum vitae.

    SECTION A complete list, in bibliographic form, of scholarly 2 publications. This section should be grouped as books, monographs, significant book reviews, and articles. Indicate publisher, date of publication, volume and page numbers of the scholarly journal in which reviews or articles appeared, or, if unpublished, indicate whether the work has been accepted for publication, etc. FOR SECTIONS 3, 4 AND 5, PLEASE GIVE A BRIEF DESCRIPTION. Each section should be 1 - 3 pages long. SECTION The dissertation and any other previous work or work 3 in progress.

    SECTION Areas of teaching interests and experience. Course 4 syllabi and descriptions of course material may be attached to this section.

    SECTION Proposed scholarly work during the fellowship year. 5 SECTION Please arrange to have three references sent 6 directly from people who are familiar with your scholarly work. These references may be included in a placement dossier, but at least two should have been written within the last year.

    Please do not send names and addresses of referees requesting us to write to them on your behalf for references.

    NOTES: You may attach an appendix containing any additional remarks or material you think the selection committee would find useful and which are not covered by the above. However, we regret that no materials can be returned unless accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope; because of space limitations, application materials supplied by candidates cannot be held over from year to year.

    For the development of a Brazilian Portuguese text-to-speech system, Lernout & Hauspie is currently looking for

    Language Specialist Brazilian Portuguese for the Language Engineering Department located in Ieper (Belgium)

    Function: This person will work on the development of the text-to-speech system for Brazilian Portuguese and/or on other projects in the field of natural language processing and speech synthesis. He/she will work in a language development group and report to the group leader.

    Profile:



    - university degree in philology or linguistics, or equivalent - excellent knowledge of Brazilian Portuguese - interest in other languages and their linguistic aspects - at least a basic experience with and interest in computers - good knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the following areas are considered an asset: - speech processing, esp. text-to-speech synthesis - phonetics - computer linguistics - natural language processing (NLP) - spoken dialog systems - computer technology - use of standard software packages - programming - other languages than the target language - ability to work in a team and independently - perseverance, accuracy and thoroughness - good social and communicative abilities - fluent in English - willingness to travel abroad for limited periods of time
