Seoul Women's University's English Language License (SWELL) program is seeking to fill 7 vacancies beginning in January 1999. The SWELL program is located in Kongnung-dong, NE Seoul, and is the premier language proficiency program within the Republic of Korea, boasting one of the most intensive and comprehensive curricula to be found. Our current faculty consists of 14 full-time teachers and further expansion is anticipated.

To learn more about the university, visit their website at:

    http://www.swu.ac.kr/english/index.html

Interested parties are advised as follows:

1). Effective January 1,salaries will range between 1.6 million - 2.2 million won, depending on academic credentials. Instructors who renew their contracts will receive an additional 100,000 won per month, per year.

2). All instructors are contracted for 20 hours of classes per week. During intensive terms, however, they are routinely scheduled for 24 hours. The additional 4 hours per week are paid as overtime, at the rate of 18,000 won per hour.

3). All instructors, as per the contract, are guaranteed 5 weeks paid vacation. These weeks, however, correspond to periods between terms and are rarely longer than 3 week intervals. In sum, these intervals generally exceed the 5 weeks guaranteed in the contract.

4). The program provides on-campus housing, in the form of a comfortable-sized cottage shared between 2 foreign instructors. A housing allowance of 200,000 won per month is available subject to these conditions:

a). It may not be possible to provide housing for instructors with families, or they may opt not to take housing due to spousal obligations. In such cases, payment of the housing allowance is guaranteed.

b). In the event that housing is not available at the start of the contract, instructors will be paid the housing allowance until such facilities are available. This rarely happens.

c). Instructors without families who decline to accept campus housing are not paid the allowance.

5). At the end of each term, instructors receive a bonus, ranging between 0 and 200,000 won per month of the term, depending on their performance in the evaluation process.

6). The program assumes responsibility for 50% of the cost for the national health insurance program.

All applications for these positions must be received no later that 5:00 PM, Seoul time, November 6, 1998. To apply, please send a cover letter and resume/CV, a recent photo, and copies of your diploma, transcripts, and picture page from your passport (originals are not necessary), to the undersigned. Applicants proceeding to step b, see below, will also need three letters of reference. All applications will then be prioritized as follows:

    * Academic credentials Ph.D. MA/MS TESL, Linguistics, Education, English (language) MA/MS other fields; BA/BS TESL, Linguistics, Education, English BA/BS other fields

    * Experience 1+ years in Korean public school or university 1+ years in any public school or university no formal experience

a). After initial screening, in-country applicants will have their first interviews, with the undersigned, between November 9 and November 17. Overseas applicants will be notified of their candidacy and will receive a formal application, via e-mail, and due by November 17. Due to the expected volume during this period, only applicants designated "candidates" will be contacted.

b). In-country applicants designated candidates after November 17 will be required to attend a second interview, with the Program Director, between November 23 and November 27. Overseas candidates will be interviewed telephonically during this period. All candidates at this stage will be notified of their disposition before December 1, 1998.

Although it may seem that our program is like most other universities, in that there is a high premium placed on academic credentials, we accept all applications, evaluate them, and place them on file for future possibilities. All interested parties, therefore, are encouraged to apply.

Any questions should be directed to the undersigned via e-mail or fax.

Good luck to all who apply!
