The department of English at the University of Lille 3, France, will be seeking to fill several positions in English linguistics and computational linguistics starting in September 1999. The official application process requires candidates to file a first set of forms before November 16 1998. One of these positions will be at the level of professor, the others at the level of "maitre de conferences" (more or less equivalent of assistant professor in the US; requires a PhD). All of these are tenure track positions

We are seeking candidates specializing in -Phonetics and phonology of English -Syntax and semantics of English -Computational linguistics applied to English

We expect candidates who are not familiar with the nongenerative frameworks currently in use in France to gain sufficient understanding of these frameworks to be able to situate their research with respect to them and to take into account the familiarity of students with these frameworks.

Lille 3 has a very good local linguistics research environment including the CNRS funded research group SILEX (Syntaxe, Interpretation, Lexique) and a phonetics laboratory. Lille is also one hour from Paris and two hours from London by high speed train. Belgium and the Netherlands are also easy to get to by rail or road.

Knowledge of French is necessary, though part of the teaching can be done in English.

Please write to Philip Miller (milleruniv-lille3.fr) for more information on the nature of the positions, the research environment, and the application procedure.
