    Visiting Position in Linguistics Linguistics Program Carleton College Northfield, MN 55057

    The Linguistics Program invites applications for a one-year visiting position, beginning in September, 1999, probably renewable for a second year. Rank and specialization are open, though preference will be given to candidates with expertise in syntax and/or morphology. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Ph.D. is required at the time of application.

    The Carleton Linguistics Program has one regular faculty member, who is the Director of the Program. Responsibilities of the visitor include teaching five courses during the first year, one in the fall term, two in each of the winter and spring terms. (A six course load is normal at Carleton.) During the second year, the visitor would teach two courses each term and be the Acting Director of the Linguistics Program, as a leave replacement.

    Description: Teaching load is four courses per semester. Teaching responsibilities of the position include ESL courses (specifically ESL for Academic Purposes), introduction to Second Language Acquisition Theories and Methods, and a graduate seminar on Second Language Acquisition Theories and Research. The position also involves advising ESL students, pursuing research and publication, and providing service to the University community. The exact assignment is dependent upon departmental needs and the background of the individual.     Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in applied linguistics or TESOL (with strong linguistics background). Teaching experience in EAP (English for Academic Purposes) programs in the US and in ESL in a non-US setting, or ESL/ bilingual programs in K-12 schools in the US. A strong record of teaching and scholarship. Experience in and commitment to ESL program development and administration, and to ESL teaching.

Demonstrated research interest in no-Indo-European language(s) is desirable.
