Job Opportunity in Computational Linguistics R&D

The Information Technology group at Sharp Laboratories of Europe Ltd (SLE) in Oxford urgently require a Computational Linguist to develop text-based language models for applications in machine translation, information extraction and information retrieval.

We are looking for people with a background of high academic achievement, who are self-motivated but also capable of working effectively in a team, and creative but practical, with a desire to push back the boundaries of current technology and see the results of their efforts through to product development.

    Applicants should have:

    * Skills and experience in statistical language processing for shallow parsing and/or sense tagging

    * Good degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational Linguistics or similar quantitive science

    * Postgraduate qualification/research experience in a relevant area

    * Interest in working in a commercial R&D environment

Sharp has 60,000 employees worldwide and is a world leader in many areas of consumer electronics. Sharp Laboratories of Europe Ltd, founded in 1990, is the European Research and Development Centre of Sharp Corporation, Japan. We are situated in a new, well-equipped laboratory in the green surroundings of the Oxford Science Park, two miles south of Oxford city centre and the University. A brand new building for the second phase of expansion of the laboratory's activities has recently been opened. We offer an excellent working environment and a highly competitive salary and benefit package.

To apply, please send your curriculum vitae with the names of two referees to Victoria Reid at the address below (email preferred, if possible), quoting the reference IT-CL-98-2:

The Department of Computing at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia has a couple of tenurable faculty positions coming up: information is at

    http://www.comp.mq.edu.au/position/98-ad2.htm

The University already houses Australia's largest NLP presence; see http://www.mri.mq.edu.au/ltg/. The department has an agreed long-term goal of establishing an undergraduate program in language technology, so applications from people with NLP/Language Technology backgrounds may well be looked upon favourably.

Closing date is 23 November 1998; you need to obtain an application package. I'd be more than happy to field informal queries about these positions.
