    JOB OPENING: TREEBANK OF GERMAN AND CORPUS TRANSLATION

    UNIVERSITY OF TUEBINGEN DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS DIVISION OF COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS

    We are advertising a research position in the VERBMOBIL project, which is funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). VERBMOBIL is concerned with the development of a portable speech-to-speech translation system for "face-to-face"-communication.

    The VERBMOBIL subproject at the Department of Computational Linguistics in Tuebingen includes the following two tasks:

    - the construction of a tree bank for the German VERBMOBIL corpus with the focus on syntactic annotation. - English-to-German translations of VERBMOBIL spoken-language dialogues, manual and automatic alignment of German/English bilingual corpora.

    Candidates for the position should have native or near-native competence in German, have research experience in German syntax, and have good language skills in English.

    The second phase of the VERBMOBIL project started in January 1997. Funding is guaranteed until December 1998. Contingent on a successful midterm review, funding is expected to be extended until December 2000. The successful candidate would be expected to take up the position as soon as possible. The position is at the rank of "Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter" (salary on the German payscale of BAT IIa; minimum of 65 000 DM per year).     Opportunity in Knowledge Engineering

    Knowledge Engineering Duties

    * Refine and improve rules and definitions of terms in the knowledge base * Proactively develop skill terms and categories for new industries through research of secondary source material * Verify, document, and fix customer-reported extraction problems * Create new test procedures and maintain accurate, current records in our bug tracking system * Work with customers to expand our knowledge base and clarify reported problems * Coordinate with other Resumix departments, particularly Account Management, Sales, and Technical Support

    The ideal candidate will have:

    BA/BS or MA/MS: * Well-rounded education * Strong language skills, especially excellent understanding of English syntax and spelling * Strong logical and analytical abilities * Familiarity with Linguistics, Symbolic Systems, Information Sciences, or Formal Logic * Foreign language ability a plus, particularly French, Spanish, or German

    Strong interpersonal skills: * Ability to work as a part of an engineering team * Self-motivated, energetic, good attention to detail, fast learner * Well organized, with excellent follow-through * Experience with customer interaction a plus
