    Lecturer in Speech Technology

Centre for Speech Technology Research Department of Linguistics University of Edinburgh

The Department of Linguistics expects to appoint a Lecturer in Speech Technology, to be based in the Centre for Speech Technology Research (CSTR), from October, 1999. The appointee will be expected to serve in rotation as Director of CSTR. (Final approval of the post is pending.)

CSTR is one of the leading international laboratories for speech technology, and has a track record of work in speech synthesis, speech recognition and speaker characterisation. (See http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk for a description of current work.) CSTR is an integral part of the Edinburgh University natural language research community and participates in fruitful collaborations with other groups involved in natural language generation, spoken dialogue systems, artificial intelligence and neural nets. There are also strong links within the Department of Linguistics, which has a distinguished history of research in phonetics and speech, and established CSTR in 1984.

Although we will consider applicants in any area of speech technology, preference will be given to applicants with special interests in speech recognition, to balance our current strength in speech synthesis, as exemplified in the Festival synthesis system.

The appointee will be expected to conduct and publish research of the highest standard, to build up and lead a team of speech researchers, and to contribute to Departmental teaching, primarily at the postgraduate level.

Informal enquiries about the post can be made to:

Professor Jim Miller Department of Linguistics, Adam Ferguson Building George Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9LL, Scotland (jmillerling.ed.ac.uk)

    or

Dr. Paul Taylor CSTR 80 South Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1HN, Scotland (paultcstr.ed.ac.uk).

Swarthmore College seeks a theoretical semanticist beginning fall, 1999, with a strong background in all areas of core linguistics and considerable field work in a non-Indo-European language so that the person can teach the structure of that language. This is a tenure track position (although there is a possibility that the starting date might be postponed by one year), and previous teaching experience is a plus. The Ph.D. must be in hand before beginning teaching. Send c.v., a one-page discussion of the classes you would like to teach, a one-page discussion of the research you plan on pursuing in the next couple of years, all publications, and a list of three recommenders with their e-mail addresses to:
