    Position Vacant French Linguistics

    The Department of Linguistics of the University of Leuven (Belgium) has a vacancy for a full-time member of staff in French Linguistics: The teaching commitment comprises the following courses at the KULAK (the Kortrijk Campus of the University of Leuven):

    -V401 French I: Grammar and Exercises (60 hrs.): 1st candidature Romance Languages

    -V411 French II: Syntax (60 hrs.): 2nd candidature Romance Languages

    -V420 General Introduction to and Methodology of Romance Linguistics (30 hrs.): 2nd candidature Romance Languages (as from 01/10/1999)

    -V506 French Historical Texts (30 hrs.): 1st candidature Modern History (as from 01/10/1999)

    Alongside this teaching commitment, the applicant is expected to conduct research in the area of French linguistics and to be maximally present at the Kortrijk Campus to be at the service of the subfaculty of Arts and of the community in the Kortrijk region. He/she is also expected to be or become familiar with the studies of Romance Languages in Leuven. The rank of the candidate accepted will depend on his/her personal file.

    Position Vacant English Linguistics

    The Department of Linguistics of the University of Leuven (Belgium) has a vacancy for a full-time member of staff in English Linguistics.

    Background and necessary qualifications: The applicant must be familiar with the diachronic study of English (phonology, morphology, syntax, and, possibly, other subspecializations). He/she must be prepared to conduct research in that area. Moreover, he/she must have general qualifications for synchronic English linguistics and proficiency.

    The position comprises an annual teaching commitment of 5 hrs.:

    1. the licentiate-courses in historical linguistics of English F471 English Linguistics: Old- and Middle English (30 hrs.) (as from 1999-2000) F472 English Linguistics: Historical Grammar (30 hrs.) (as from 1999-2000)

    2. the following candidature-courses: F443 English Linguistics I (30 hrs): phonetics and morphology F455 English Proficiency II (30 hrs.)

    3. a course from the postgraduate study in Commercial Language Proficiency: F454 Mastery of written and oral formulation techniques: English (30 hrs.)

    The Computational Linguistics and Information Processing (CLIP) Laboratory in the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies at University of Maryland has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher in computational linguistics and cross-language information retrieval.

    We are a dynamic interdiciplinary computational linguistics program with faculty from three departments and major research efforts in machine translation, information retrieval, semantic analysis, generation, and development of large-scale statistical language processing tools. We are seeking a talented researcher with proven organizational skills to develop a personal research program on the application of natural language processing techniques to cross-language information retrieval and to coordinate the efforts of the other members of that project. The ideal candidate would be self motivated, have experience in project management and/or software engineering, and have demonstrated clear potential for excellence in some related area. A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Linguistics, or a related field is required. Proficiency in C or C++ is required and knowledge of Java or Lisp would be a plus.

    Xerox Research Centre Europe (XRCE) has a position for:

    Project Leader - Advanced Developments Ref: ATS/LI-97223

    In addition to research, the mission of the Xerox Research Centre Europe is to establish industrial and academic R&D partnerships, and manage the evaluation and productisation of technologies and research results.

    The Xerox Research Centre Europe is looking for a project leader, capable of managing, coordinating, and contributing to international projects in the area of natural language processing; your role will be to use Xerox technology, XRCE research results in the area of computational linguistics, and other cutting-edge technologies to develop services and product prototypes in collaboration with our partners.

    The candidate will have at least 5 years of experience in developing and integrating applications. He or she will be a dynamic team player, capable of working with both engineers and researchers in an international setting. The candidate is autonomous and has innovative ideas they wish to pursue.

    Candidates have the following competencies:

    * An advanced degree in a relevant field * A minimum of five years experience in systems design and development, from design to product delivery. * A proven track record of delivering system projects on time and in spec * Previous experience as a project leader * Strong experience in C++, C. * Technical knowledge of the major operating systems (Unix, Windows) and related user applications. * Knowledge of SGML, Java, OO methodologies are a plus. * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills * Fluency in French and English
