ZHONGHUA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (ZSP)1998
STUDY CHINESE...TEACH ENGLISH...AND TRAVEL IN CHINA
INTRODUCTION: Established by WCCEC and educational institutions in
China, the Zhonghua Scholarship Program (ZSP) is a cross-cultural
education program that combines study abroad, teaching ESL and
cultural education. It is open to all native speakers of English who
are interested in China and the Chinese language, but proficiency in
Chinese is not a prerequisite. ZSP participants depart for China in
late August each year and return to the U.S. in mid-July the following
year.
BENEFITS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Every scholarship recipient is provided
with all travel expenses (round trip) from the U.S. departure point
(Cities on the West Coast) to the host school in China, medical
insurance, accommodation, and a monthly stipend (1,500 Yuan and up,
about the salary of a full professor at the university in China). The
ZSP has a Personal Tutorial System (PTS) that aims at increasing
communicative competence in Chinese (12-14 hrs/wk study time), an
English teaching component that requires the participant to teach
English (about 12-14 hrs/wk to K-12 or college students depending on
the host school)and a paid cultural tour at the end of the
program. There is also a paid winter vocation around the Chinese New
Year.
ORIENTATION, EXPENSES AND TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS: Scholarship recipients
are required to participate in the one-week Orientation Program.
Accommodation and training materials are provided for all participants
during the orientation. Each participant is responsible for a US $500
fee (not covered by the scholarship) to defray the cost, the visa
application fee and service fee for group travel arrangements (total
of US $70 for both), as well as domestic travel to the U.S. departure
point.

JOB OPENING
The international research group on the Mental Lexicon (host
university: Universite de Montreal) has a position open for a
Post-doctoral fellow. The post is being offered jointly by Universite
de Montreal and McGill University, both located in Montreal, Quebec.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Linguistics, with a
specialization in psycho and/or neurolinguistics. The fellowship is a
one-year post TO BE FILLED IMMEDIATELY. Starting date: May 1, 1998
Salary: in accordance with the norms in force at the Universite de
Montreal.
Applicants should be interested in conducting cross-language research
on the mental lexicon as part of an international collaborative
research initiative. The post-doctoral fellow will also be expected to
take part in supervision of graduate students working on the project.

POSITION VACANCY
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF LINGUISTICS: The Department of Linguistics at
the University of Hawai`i at Manoa invites applications for a
full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank,
(position number 82425), to begin August 1, 1998, pending availability
of position and funding. The Department has a strong commitment to
both theory and primary descriptive data, with a focus on Pacific and
Asian languages.
Typical teaching arrangements are two courses, either graduate or
undergraduate, per semester, with time for research.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Linguistics or a related area
(applicants presently pursuing a Ph.D. must offer evidence that the
degree will have been granted by August 1, 1998). Applicants will be
expected to have done substantial research on one or more Pacific
and/or Asian languages, to have experience in dealing with primary
data, and to have demonstrated research ability in their area(s) of
specialization.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: specialization in acoustic phonetics,
semantics, creole studies, historical linguistics.
MINIMUM SALARY: $34,644.00 annually.
