    The Speech and Language group at Canon Research Centre Europe (CRE) is expanding rapidly. We have a number of positions for exceptionally talented research scientists and top quality software engineers.

    Canon has 70,000 employees worldwide and is an acknowledged world-leader in many markets, including cameras, photocopiers and printers. Constant innovation underlies Canon's success and at CRE you will have the opportunity to play a significant part in this.

    The roles are at levels from fresh PhD/exceptional graduate to experienced researcher/engineer. We are looking for people with a first-class academic background in computer science, electrical engineering, computational linguistics, physics, mathematics or similar quantitative science, a high degree of curiosity and the ability to learn quickly - self-motivated people who like to continuously improve and excel.

    We are looking for:

    Research scientists - with strong analytical and programming skills. A higher degree or similar experience in any of the following areas would be an advantage:

    - digital signal processing or image processing - speech recognition algorithms (particularly large vocabulary) - natural language processing or computational linguistics

    Software engineers - with excellent software engineering and programming skills using C/C++. Experience in any of the following areas would be an advantage:

    - project leadership - commercial software projects - software embedding on dedicated hardware - large robust software systems - speech recognition or signal processing - man-machine interaction

    Successful candidates will join a high calibre team performing research and work on practical implementations in the following project areas:

    Speech recognition: we require researchers to further develop our compact speech recogniser and software engineers to integrate it into advanced products.

    Speech understanding: we require researchers to take leading roles shaping a young project on interactive voice driven technology. We also need software engineers for product integration of this system.

    Information retrieval: we require software engineers to work on implementations of our information retrieval technology for networked multimedia applications.

    Product conceptualisation and prototyping: we require software engineers with strong interest in user interface and product design issues to develop simulations and prototypes of new product concepts integrating our speech and language technologies.

    We offer an excellent working environment and a highly competitive salary and benefits package.

    POST-DOC POSITION AT THE DEPARTMENT OF LANGUAGE & SPEECH, NIJMEGEN UNIVERSITY

    The Department of Language & Speech offers a two year post-doc position for research in automatic speech recognition.

    The emphasis of the research must be on acoustic decoding. More specifically, we are interested in the application of recent results from research in auditory perception to automatic speech recognition. However, we want to be able to integrate these results in the 'conventional' Viterbi search engine found in state-of-the-art real-time HMM or hybrid ANN/HMM recognizers. We believe that breakthroughs in ASR are only to be expected from clever combinations of auditory based acoustic pre-processing and local distance computation in the search.

    The 'Automatic Acoustic Recognition Technologies' (A2RT) group at the Dept. of Language & Speech consists of some 10 post-docs and PhD students working on automatic speech and speaker recognition, mainly for telephone applications. Individual research projects address topics like feature transforms for channel normalization, local distance computation, noise robustness, confidence measures, modeling of pronunciation variation, spoken language dialogue systems, and text-independent and text-prompted speaker verification. The group participates in several national and international research projects and actions.

    Additional information on the research activities can be found by consulting the following WWW sites:

    * http://lands.let.kun.nl/

    for the Dept. of Language & Speech in general, and

    * http://grid.let.rug.nl:4321/PP-TST

    for information on the program on Language and Speech Technology funded by the Dutch Research Council NWO.

    We expect the research of the post-doc position that is advertised here to contribute mainly to the three or four topics at the start of the list.

    If you are interested, send your cv, a list of relevant publications and a concise indication of the research you would like to carry out to

    It goes without saying that Nijmegen University is an equal opportunity employer.
