    The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan seeks to appoint a full-time lecturer of Korean beginning in the Fall Semester of 1998. The initial appointment will be up to one year with the possibility of renewal. Native or near-native fluency in Korean and excellent command of English are required. Preference is given to applicants with an M.A. Degree or higher in Linguistics, Foreign Language Education, or TESOL. Candidates with experience of teaching Korean at a variety of levels using various teaching techniques and/or with ability or experience in Computer assisted instruction are especially welcome. Appointees will be expected to teach modern Korean at any of the three levels, elementary, intermediate and advanced, and to train graduate teaching assistants. The classroom teaching hours will be 10 to 12 hours per week.     Phonetic / Prosodic Labeling Position The Speech Synthesis and Machine Learning Group at Motorola's Corporate Research Laboratory in Schaumburg would like to announce an immediate opening in the student internship program for an experienced Phonetic / Prosodic Labeler (applicants should be currently enrolled students working towards a degree in Linguistics or Speech Processing).

    Position Description: This full-time position entails detailed labeling of spectrograms and waveforms for a large speech database. The successful candidate may also be asked to perform listening tests to rate various text-to-speech synthesizers. The anticipated project duration is six months, but extensions are possible. An initial training period lasting several weeks, will require full-time presence at the Schaumburg facility, after which the remainder of the work may be completed in the individual's school or home (if necessary or desired, a computer may be borrowed from Motorola for the duration of the project).

    Candidate's Qualifications:

    * Experience in reading spectrograms and assigning accurate phonemes and intonation information to utterances (recent, successful completion of an Introductory Phonetics course may be sufficient) * Native competency in English; competency in languages other than English is also desirable * Knowledge of ToBI labeling guidelines and/or labeling tools is a big plus, and will weigh heavily in an applicant's favor * Basic familiarity with Windows NT is required, familiarity with UNIX is helpful * Must be a self-motivated, detail-oriented, consistent and efficient individual * Good written and oral communication skills
