Subject: Ling Post-Doc Fellowship at JHU Cognitive Science

With funding from an NSF Learning and Intelligent Systems grant, the Department of Cognitive Science at Johns Hopkins University is offering a post-doctoral fellowship in linguistics. We seek candidates who will contribute to and complement the department's current areas of research on generative linguistics (see http://www.cog.jhu.edu/ for further information about the department). Particularly encouraged to apply are candidates who combine research in syntax or its interfaces with semantics, morphology, and prosody with work in language acquisition, language processing, and/or formal/computational modeling.

The appointment will initially be made for one year, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year. The first year's salary will be in the low to mid $20K's.

Interested applicants should send a statement of interests and a CV to the following address:

Robert Frank LIS Postdoc Search Department of Cognitive Science Johns Hopkins University 3400 N. Charles Street Baltimore, MD 21218

Applicants should also have three referees send letters of recommendation to this address. To guarantee full consideration, materials should be received by April 21st.

Johns Hopkins University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and encourages women and minorities to apply.

Columbia is looking for a Director of the Language Resource Center, a new entity being financed in part by a grant from Mellon Foundation. The Director will also have responsibility for the Media Support Center, which functions as the Columbia language laboratory, the Music Humanities Listening Facility, and the facility where students in Film Studies can find videotapes for viewing. The position is available effective July 1, 1998.

Initially the Language Resource Center will be located on the 100 level of Lewisohn Hall, though it is expected that within a year or two the Center will move to new facilities adjacent to the Lehman Library in the School of International and Public Affairs where new language laboratory facilities will also be relocated.

As Chair of the Search Committee, I want to make every effort to be sure that qualified and interested persons both within Columbia and without know of the position which has been advertised in the New York Times and the Chronicle for Higher Education. Please ask any interested persons to submit their resume no later than mid-April, 1998. Applications should be sent to:

Director, Language Resource Center Search Dean's Office, Continuing Education & Special Programs Columbia University 2970 Broadway 303 Lewisohn Hall -- Mailcode 4110 New York, NY 10027

I would appreciate your passing along a copy of this letter with its attached job description to language faculty or anyone else of whom you may know who might be interested.
