    University of Aarhus

    The Faculty of Arts

Position as Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor

Applications are invited for a position as lecturer in Linguistics, at the Department of Linguistics, University of Aarhus, tenable from January 1, 1999, or as soon as possible thereafter. Applicants are asked to document a thorough basis in general linguistics and research experience that is relevant for one or more of the following areas: second language acquisition, language change (grammaticisation and lexical development), language typology, corpus linguistics or phonetics/phonology. These areas are defined in explicit recognition of the tasks of a linguistic science that exists in a social context characterized by migration, international cooperation, and rapid technological development.

The appointee will be required to take part in all types of activities: research, teaching, and administration. Acquiantance with Danish is an advantage but not a condition; non-Danish-speaking applicants are required to undertake to learn Danish within a reasonably short period (a year or two). The language of instruction is Danish, but English, Swedish, or Norwegian is acceptable during the initial period.

The annual salary is at present 23,158 Dkr plus 5,549.48 Dkr bonus (5 years' degree seniority), including a statutory 5% pension fund contribution (refunded on permanent emigration or at retirement).

The application should be marked 1998-212/1-123, and addressed to The Rector, Aarhus University, Journalkontoret, DK-8000 Aarhus C, Denmark. Closing date: 27 May 1998, 12 o'clock midday.

Documentation of qualifications (three copies if possible) should not be enclosed, but sent separately to The Department of Linguistics, Aarhus University, Willemoesgade 15D, DK-8200 Aarhus N, Denmark. The documentation should be marked as above, and should include:

    (a) Publications and other written material which are submitted as particularly relevant for the application; (b) a complete list of publications and other work, with an indication of which items are submitted as particularly relevant; (c) a curriculum vitae, including details of teaching and administrative experience, as well as research projects; (d) copies of academic diplomas, documentation of teaching qualifications, and documentation of Danish proficiency if relevant.

Applications are evaluated by a special selection committee, whose recommendation is confidential, but will be sent to all applicants. The selection committee has the right to request further material from applicants. Material sent on computer discs will not be considered.

For further information about the post or the department, please contact Hans Arndt, Head of Department, Department of Linguistics, Aarhus University. Tel. (45) 8942 2146. Fax (45) 8942 2175. E-mail LINHAHUM.AAU.DK.

Applications are invited for an EPSRC-funded PhD studentship from graduates with good Honours degrees in language or linguistics. Knowledge of corpus-linguistic approaches and experience with Unix would be relevant. The studentship is available for a 3-year period, starting in October 1998, to work with the Unit in its research.

The Research Unit's activities include the development and application of automated systems in the fields of language description, NLP and information technology, especially text retrieval. It is envisaged that the studentship will focus on an aspect of current work on the lexico-grammatical classification of rare new words, based on the computer-aided observation of English text.

Candidates should have a relevant connection with the UK; further advice may be found on the EPSRC Web-site: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk.
